Transforming 2D drawings into high-end 3D models and lighting design visualisations

Focusing on lighting, the process goes beyond simply building a 3D model — it is about developing a precise lighting design that simulates how light truly behaves within a space.

Starting from a 2D plan, the geometry is translated into a spatially accurate model 3D environment, often developed as a SketchUp 3D model. This digital framework is then layered with both daylight conditions — considering orientation, window proportions, and time of day — and artificial lighting, including fixture placement, intensity, beam angles, and colour temperature. Using a dedicated lighting simulator, these variables are tested and refined to produce a realistic representation of light distribution and atmosphere.

The result is a series of visuals that reflect how the space will feel across different moments, not just how it appears on paper. Subtle variations in light, contrast, and ambience become visible, allowing for a more intentional and controlled design process.

For interior designers, this becomes a powerful design and presentation tool. It enables early-stage testing of lighting decisions, supports more refined atmosphere development, and provides clients with a realistic preview of the final environment. Rather than relying on assumptions, the 3D model communicates both mood and functionality with clarity — helping to accelerate approvals and giving designers a more confident, compelling position when presenting their schemes.

Turning a hand-drawn interior sketch or a 2D plan into a precise 3D model begins with carefully interpreting proportions, spatial relationships, and the original design intent. This information is translated into an accurate digital environment, typically developed as a SketchUp 3D model, where the foundation of the project is built with clarity and structure.

From there, materials, lighting, and key architectural elements are introduced to develop a coherent scene. Using a dedicated lighting simulator, the lighting design is carefully studied and refined, allowing the model 3D environment to reflect realistic light behaviour, intensity, and distribution. The project is then developed into photorealistic renders that capture how the space will actually feel — including light levels, atmosphere, textures, and focal points.

For interior designers, this process becomes a powerful communication and decision-making tool. Instead of asking clients to interpret drawings or imagine outcomes, the 3D model presents a clear, immersive vision. This level of clarity reduces hesitation, accelerates approvals, and significantly increases the likelihood of securing the project, as clients feel confident committing to a space they can already experience visually.

Converting a 2D plan into a precise 3D model begins with translating detailed drawings—whether CAD files or scaled PDFs—into a spatially accurate digital environment. At this stage, proportions, volumes, and relationships between elements are carefully defined, typically within a SketchUp 3D model, ensuring the model 3D structure reflects the original intent with clarity.

Once the foundation is established, materials, furnishings, and, critically, lighting design are introduced to build depth and realism. Using a dedicated lighting simulator, light behaviour, intensity, and atmosphere are tested and refined, allowing the space to be experienced as it would function in reality. The project then evolves into photorealistic renders that capture how the space will truly look and feel.

For interior designers, this process transforms technical drawings into a compelling visual narrative. Rather than relying on clients to interpret plans, the 3D model communicates a fully realised space. This clarity builds trust, accelerates approvals, and gives designers a strong advantage when pitching, as clients are far more likely to commit to a scheme they can already visualise with confidence.

Modern Villa

Residential Project

Modeling Texturing Daylight Render

A technical conversion of a 2,500 sq ft residential plan into high-end marketing renders. Focus on material accuracy and lighting simulation for an open-concept

The objective for the Modern Villa project was to create a set of images that felt like high-end architectural photography before a single wall was built. We started with a set of PDF sketches from the designer, building out a comprehensive 3D shell in 3ds Max. Our lighting study focused on the large floor-to-ceiling windows, simulating the soft, diffused light of a North American morning. We meticulously textured the space using high-resolution scans of the specified materials, including rift-sawn oak and honed travertine. The final renders were used by the designer to secure final material approvals from the homeowner, saving weeks of potential rework during the construction phase. The project demonstrates our commitment

Opal came to me with a clear ask: their skincare line was gentle, effective, and ingredient-focused, but their visual identity felt generic and overlooked. I redesigned everything from the ground up, starting with a new logotype that felt softer and more considered. The photography direction emphasized natural light and minimal styling—no aggressive shadows or clinical backdrops. I designed a

ABOUT

The Artist Behind the Renders

I’m Leila, a professional lighting designer and 3D visualisation artist based in Portugal, working with clients globally. My work focuses on the aesthetic and emotional experience of space, helping architects and interior designers translate abstract concepts into precise 3D models and immersive visual realities that clients can genuinely connect with.

I specialise in bridging the gap between technical drawings and atmosphere — developing each SketchUp 3D model with careful attention to proportion, materiality, and, above all, lighting design. Using advanced tools, including a lighting simulator, I ensure that every model 3D environment reflects not only how a space looks, but how it feels.

My approach combines engineering precision with a photographer’s sensitivity to light. For me, a successful render goes beyond pixels — it is about accuracy, atmosphere, and the narrative of the space. I work as a natural extension of your design team, supporting you in communicating your vision with clarity, confidence, and depth.
